Maps, data and licences
Effective
Tomodachi is built on open map data and open-source software. This page credits the people and projects whose work you are using when you use this app, and says what each is licensed under.
Maps
OpenFreeMap © OpenMapTiles Data from OpenStreetMap
Map data is © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License. The map tiles are served by OpenFreeMap from OpenMapTiles schemas.
Places and routes
- Nominatim, run by the OpenStreetMap Foundation, turns a place name into coordinates. The underlying data is © OpenStreetMap contributors under the Open Database License.
- OSRM computes the routes and walking times shown in directions, also from OpenStreetMap data.
- Google Places is used only to confirm that a place exists. No Google content is stored.
- Wikidata provides bilingual place names, released under CC0.
Photographs
Photographs of places come from Wikimedia Commons, where photographers share their work under free licences. Each is credited underneath it with the photographer and the licence; tap the credit to see the original.
Stations and lines
Station and line data: National Land Numerical Information (railway data, N02-23), Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, processed by Tomodachi, CC BY 4.0. Station names in English and station numbers: Wikidata, CC0.
「国土数値情報(鉄道データ)」(国土交通省)を加工して作成
Line colours and station numbers belong to the railway companies. Tomodachi is not affiliated with them. The line badges in the app are our own plain drawings, not the companies’ marks.
Weather
Forecasts come from Open-Meteo, whose free data is published under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. Open-Meteo draws on national weather services including the Japan Meteorological Agency.
Open-source software
Tomodachi is built with React Native and Expo, and draws the map with MapLibre GL, all under permissive open-source licences. Around a thousand open-source packages go into the app: the overwhelming majority are MIT, ISC, Apache 2.0 or BSD licensed, and none of them place copyleft obligations on this app.
Fonts
Momo Trust Sans and Noto Sans JP are used under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits embedding them in an application.
Tomo and the artwork
Tomo, the illustrations and the wordmark are ours. Please do not reuse them.
Something wrong on the map?
Because the map is OpenStreetMap, anyone can fix it, including you. A correction made there reaches everyone who uses that data, not only this app.
If the problem is with something Tomodachi itself shows you, write to info.tomodachiai@gmail.com.
The same text is shown inside the Tomodachi app.
