These are the rules for using Tomodachi. The short version: we write you a plan and help you find your way, you keep responsibility for your own trip, and we do not book anything on your behalf.
Tomodachi plans trips to Japan and helps you follow them once you are there. It suggests places, builds a day-by-day itinerary, gives you directions and maps that work without a signal, and helps you say things in Japanese.
An itinerary is a suggestion. Tomodachi does not book anything, does not hold reservations and does not pay for anything on your behalf. Every restaurant, hotel, train and ticket is yours to arrange, and opening hours, prices and availability change without telling us. Check before you travel to a place that matters to you.
Part of the itinerary is written by an AI model. It is usually good and it is sometimes wrong. Treat it the way you would treat a well-read friend’s recommendation rather than an official source.
Lost Mode shows you where you are, the way back to the address you confirmed, and a card you can hand to a stranger. It works offline because everything it needs was downloaded in advance.
It is not an emergency service and it cannot contact one for you. In an emergency in Japan, call 110 for police and 119 for fire or ambulance. Do that first and use the app afterwards.
Directions and routes come from open map data that may be out of date or incomplete. Use your own judgement, especially near roads, water, railways and in bad weather.
A trip is identified by a code. Anyone you give that code to can ask to join, and you decide whether to let them in. Whoever created the trip can rename it, approve people and remove them.
Treat your trip code the way you would treat a door key. We cannot tell whether the person holding it is someone you meant to give it to.
You are responsible for what you put into the app, including anything you type that other travellers on your trip can see.
- Use the app to break the law, in Japan or anywhere else.
- Try to reach trips, accounts or data that are not yours.
- Scrape, bulk-download or resell the places, itineraries or map data the app shows you.
- Interfere with the service or the people using it.
We can suspend access that is doing any of the above.
One payment covers everyone travelling on that trip. The price is shown before you pay, in your own currency where we can, and payment is handled by our payment provider rather than by us.
A generated itinerary is delivered immediately, so if something has gone wrong with your trip, write to us rather than assuming nothing can be done. We would rather fix it than argue about it.
During the beta the app may be free, and paid features may change. We will not charge you for something you already paid for.
The app, its design, its illustrations and its writing belong to us. Your trip details belong to you, and you give us permission to use them only to run the service for you.
Map data, place data and weather come from third parties under their own licences, which are listed on the Licences screen inside the app.
Tomodachi is provided as it is. We work hard on it and we do not promise it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or right about every place it recommends.
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses arising from your travel decisions, from a place being closed or different from its description, from a route being wrong, or from the app being unavailable. Nothing here limits liability that cannot legally be limited, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
If we are found liable despite this, our liability is limited to what you paid us for the trip in question.
You can stop using the app whenever you like, and deleting it removes everything held on your phone. Write to us if you also want your trip deleted from our server.
We may update these terms. The effective date at the top says when the current version started, and we will tell you in the app if a change matters.
These terms are governed by the law of Japan, and the courts of Japan have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer elsewhere, this does not take away protections your own country gives you.
